I had a great interview with Tracy Christiansen from KBYU Community Connections back in February. We talked about one of my favorite programs that the American Red Cross has in our local community and nation wide to promote home fire safety and education. Please watch...

I was recently asked how I feel about employees/volunteers who come up with solutions instead of you having to come up with all the solutions myself.
In reply I have to say, as a supervisor, I love it when employees/volunteers take initiative to get a project going. It is frustrating when I let people know that I have a project to get done and it doesn’t because the team is waiting for step-by-step instruction that I often don’t have the time to give. I really appreciate it when team members are resourceful in finding ways to get the project done and communicating what the plan is and initiating it. I believe that this kind of initiative builds confidence and empowers our employees, volunteers, and teams. I encourage it! It also allows for ownership of the project, building the likelihood of success in planning and implementing the work on the project. I recently witnessed how important this can be in assessing the needs of projects and programs in our work. Earlier this year we underwent a process of assessment of the different needs within our organization. It really had us looking at where the gaps are in our programs. Looking at current positions filled, open positions, and positions that are needed to complete the work within each of our service programs. One of our team leaders took this to heart and actually preformed the analysis and was able to present her findings in a clear and precise way that made it easy to ad positions that were lacking in that area. Using her templet the other programs were able to proceed and the assessment was completely successful in adding in the next phase of the strategic plan to enhance our human resources be they volunteer or staff. |
